We've been flying Spirit for years. It's no frills, but they do a good job. Now you want to talk about nightmares, look to jet blue. We had a flight Denver to San Juan with a stop at JFK. Jet Blue canceled the flight from JFK while we were in the air to JFK. Missed two days of our cruse. I'll take a couple of weeks, or even a day, notice of cancellation anytime.

yes, i agree that any airline can screw up badly at almost any time
Spirit had three months to let us know they’d cancelled our flight. and then after they stranded us with our bags at the airport, Spirit refused ANY help at all in finding an alternate airline. and we finally had to threaten to sue them to get our damned money back.
These were not just normal or accidental operational problems.
