On Thursday morning, a White House aide named Kelly Sadler joked about Arizona Sen. John McCain's opposition to CIA nominee Gina Haspel by noting that "he's dying anyway."
It was the latest in a series of increasingly nasty comments about McCain: Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) called it "ridiculous" that McCain wasn't planning to invite President Donald Trump to his funeral while a retired general on Fox News on Thursday referred to a debunked conspiracy theory that McCain had informed on his comrades while a prisoner of war during Vietnam.
There's no disputing the fact that McCain has terminal brain cancer and that he is very unlikely to be around at this time next year. It's also indisputable that McCain is a genuine American hero -- who fought and suffered for his country in the theater of war and had decided the better part of the last four decades of his life to public service as a House member, a senator and a two-time presidential candidate.
That even some part of his final days -- or weeks or months -- is consumed by this sort of garbage is maddening. And depressing. And made even more so by the fact that this is, in fact, the new normal.

If McCain dies while holding on to anger at Trump, he is in for a rough ride after death.
Salivating about the assassination of President Trump is OK though.
McCain has gone out of his way to offend and abuse the very people who should be on his side. Maybe if McCain had behaved in an honest and ethical way people would mourn his illness and his eventual passing.
He has done dirty to so many, there will be very few who miss him.
Ok, how many celebrated Reagan’s death? More recently, Nancy’s death? Or how about Kathy Griffon cutting off Trump’s head - and all the copy cats since that?
What a joke these reporters are today.
Well if HE is going to be so low class about it, then we can too.
Who the hell publicly plans his own state funeral?
To the author:
Chris, Senator McCain has made himself a joke. He is writing books and allowing quotes. He (not his family) issues a statement saying he does not want the President, a member of his party, to attend his funeral. What sort of clown does that?
He laments and regrets the VP choice that cut Sarah Palin’s successful rising star to ribbons after her presence keep him from abject defeat. This is after she supports him against conservative out of loyalty in 2010.
He says Obama should eulogize him. Wow.
He votes by using an Imperial thumbs-down at the well of the Senate to something his party was avowed to pass? How big an ass does he have to be?
CNN should not be on the air without having to pay “equal time.”
“Fox News on Thursday referred to a debunked conspiracy theory that McCain had informed on his comrades”
BS, they called him songbird for a reason and it was Fox Business Channel assahats. Try to get something right.
McTraitor is a hero to these people.
I prefer the old fashioned way, let the people decide.
As if CNN cared.
But it was ok for the “comedienne” at the correspondents dinner to joke about abortion.
Me too. And I dont give a crap about who is invited to this traitors funeral, as long as John McStain is there.
Leave it to CNN to protect their liberal own.
McCain being at the top of their list.
McCain is a particularly rotten person who is being even more rotten as he dies. If he can still dish it out, he can still take it.
Doesn’t it seem strange that CNN only finds joking about the death or act of dying concerninga a republican when it is McCain who has cited with the liberals on a large number of occasions? Or should it be expected from them?

It was McCain’s decision to remain a Senator after being diagnosed with brain cancer - rather than do the right thing for the citizens of Arizona by resigning so the governor could appoint a full-time Senator, which is what the citizens of Arizona are paying taxes for and deserve.
He decided to stay in the arena - and is apparently healthy enough to throw rocks at Palin and Trump. Therefore, I’ll joke about his death or say anything I please about him - just like I would about any politician - until he proves that he is indeed too sick to participate in the process any longer - and resigns.
Some people bring joy wherever they go, some whenever they go...
Joking about John McCain’s death is our terrible new normal
Maybe but he is the one that created the persona that earned the contempt. Angry, bitter nasty old RINO that cannot get beyond his reputation.
When are they ever going to stop using the mcCain hero button!..He’s not!...A collaborator is not a hero!
American former P.O.W.s who were in the Hanoi Hilton North Vietnamese prison ‘with’ John McCain called him a Songbird who collaborated with the enemy against his own country..... They accused him of turning against them and against his own country ‘in exchange for PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT’ while many of the actually brave and honorable American P.O.W.s endured torture and denial of medical care and food for refusing to collaborate.
......”McCain is a particularly rotten person who is being even more rotten as he dies”.....
A bitter self deluded evil creature.
