On Thursday morning, a White House aide named Kelly Sadler joked about Arizona Sen. John McCain's opposition to CIA nominee Gina Haspel by noting that "he's dying anyway."
It was the latest in a series of increasingly nasty comments about McCain: Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) called it "ridiculous" that McCain wasn't planning to invite President Donald Trump to his funeral while a retired general on Fox News on Thursday referred to a debunked conspiracy theory that McCain had informed on his comrades while a prisoner of war during Vietnam.
There's no disputing the fact that McCain has terminal brain cancer and that he is very unlikely to be around at this time next year. It's also indisputable that McCain is a genuine American hero -- who fought and suffered for his country in the theater of war and had decided the better part of the last four decades of his life to public service as a House member, a senator and a two-time presidential candidate.
That even some part of his final days -- or weeks or months -- is consumed by this sort of garbage is maddening. And depressing. And made even more so by the fact that this is, in fact, the new normal.

I thought this was going to be a vanity about FR..........
Remember when those oh-so-trendy New Yorkers put on a production of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar where they murdered Trump. Your own commentators didn’t call out the production. They called out criticism of the production.
So, stuff it about the “terrible new normal”, CNN.
No proof this was said.
No proof he has cancer.
Prove me wrong.
His life was political, and his death will be the removal of a political thorn in the side of conservatives. Don’t care if you don’t like it. Just the way it is.
McCain needs to man up and resign with what dignity he has left, which aint much.
Your reward is waiting for you “songbird”. This Vietnam Vet hopes you get the reward you so richly deserve.
Well....
Given that if I were king I would have McStain immediately hanged - my view is much harsher than yours. I hope he gets right with God. But I hope he dies this very minute.
If this was 1950 and everyone was civil I would agree with you. It isn’t.
I want CNN dead.
And in Nancy Reagan’s death.
For cryin’ out loud. It is something else to watch the left protect McTraitor now.
If McCain hadn’t been so mean, uncooperative and vindictive we would not be seeing negative comments on his condition. Seems as though he earned many of the comments
I don’t see him as a great statesman as we have had in the past.
Chrissie SizzleLean needs to retire to his fainting couch.
FWIW, I wouldn’t wish ill upon another human being but what he/she says & does in public is fair game with character questioning thrown in.
Cilizzilla defines dirtbag.
Debunked by what? Thousands of hours of Vietcong surveillance video? What a joke. HIS word is all we have to go on.
Oh get the heck out of here Cilizza. I sympathize with anyone dealing with dying. But McCain is demanding attention trying to control what happens after his death. For example, Hatch is cited negatively here and he’s a gentleman.
Some of us view death with no fear, and even a bit of humor. I laugh and joke about death, not as avoidance, but as it is not that big of a deal.
I already physically died and came back. It is a lot better there than here. If I die again today, that is fine.
During which he committed crimes FAR worse than those which put James Trafficant behind bars.
That's the only good thing he's doing. Arizona law states that if he resigns now, a special election will be called. If he croaks after June, the GOP Gov. appoints his successor.
