I’ve noticed over the years your animus towards Hawass, and I agree that his ego is enormous and he probably controls much of the research and information coming out of Egypt over the past few decades.
But once you get past that, if you can, I’d argue that he has publicized Egyptology so much, he has increased the public interest in Egypt tenfold what it was before he stepped forward. Egypt truly became a tourist destination again instead of a often-overlooked dusty backwater.
Perhaps this is coincidental and would have happened anyway, but to give the devil his due, it began on his watch. Whoever heard of a Director of Egyptology before Hawass? Name one.
The Chicago House has spent around a century making hand-drawn copies of the inscriptions and wall paintings throughout Egypt. When the march of time and Aswan High Dam and obliterated all remaining ancient monument texts, the Chicago House' copies will be the surviving record of what once existed.
By contrast, Hawass has had every man-jack he can find stuffing concrete into every crack to temporarily improve the looks of the monuments while permanently destroying their authenticity.
His concrete will help wick up the water and salts into the soil and destroy those very same inscriptions and monuments. He's grossly incompetent, and xenophobic/nationalist/notinventedhere regarding scholars and the study of ancient Egypt, oh, and he's got that kindhearted hatred of the Jews that I find so charming. :^)
But I have no animus toward the man. :^D
