I'm reading an interesting book, Scarlett's Sisters: Young Women in the Old South, by Anya Jabour, a professor at the University of Montana. I got it off the library clearance shelf on Friday. I haven't got to the part about debuts and balls yet.

Imagine a patch of sprawled, rain-battered white peonies. My mother's Aunt Clara described that as looking like a passel of drunken debutantes. Not that she would have known.
