The world's oldest standing army is getting some new headgear. The Pope's Swiss Guards plan to replace their metal helmets with plastic PVC ones made with a 3D printer, giving the army cooler and more comfortable headgear when standing guard for hours at a time. The new helmets are half the cost of the old, heavy ones, but still cost £740. The Swiss Guards unveiled the helmet prototype before their annual swearing-in ceremony on Sunday.

The Swiss Guards are real soldiers who are veterans of the Swiss army before joining the Guards. Other European states used the have Swiss guard units the most famous being the Swiss Guards of the French monarchy. The Swiss were the premier soldiers of the Renaissance era brining back the phalanx.

The new helmets are half the cost of the old, heavy ones, but still cost £740. Damn, that's $1,001.62. For a plastic helmet. I think the basic Kevlar was around 170 or so.

The pope has called for universal disarmament, so will he disarm the Swiss guards who protect him and Vatican City? Will his warm feelings and foot kissing convince the m*slims in Rome to spare him from the forthcoming jihad?

1506, huh?
Trying to think of any pivotal battles, epic sieges, or world-shaking conflicts that the Swiss Army was involved in. Any famous generals? I'm coming up empty.
They do make a pretty handy knife, but don't bring it to a gunfight...
The new helmet is impressive, think the guards should wear it all the time. Without it they look like fast food workers...

The false pope is against guns so when will they replace theirs?

Does anyone know if any of the old ones are going on sale?
Back in the late 70's or early 80's, the British Brigade of Guards switched to synthetic fur and sold off their entire stock of real bearskins. The black bear was an endangered species in Europe, Russia was the only European source that would sell bearskins, and the usual enviros were objecting. So the Brits threw in with synthetics. That was the time to buy; I paid $300 for mine, which included a complete set of regimental plumes. I believe the British switched back to real fur a few years later, so that was a windfall.

Get your Swiss Guard action figure by Mattel.
Seriously, a “plastic helmet” is not a helmet — it’s a plastic hat.

Seriously, a plastic helmet is not a helmet its a plastic hat.It might be lighter, but I doubt that plastic will be a heck of a lot coolerespecially since it is black.
