Britain’s oldest new parents, aged 63 and 65, have baby, 1, taken away by social services

A COUPLE have become Britain’s oldest new parents — only to have their baby taken from them by social services.

The 63-year-old mum and her partner, 65, are “devastated” after bosses stepped in and took the child from them.

The couple’s age is thought to be a factor in fears over the one-year-old’s well-being. A source said: “They are devastated.

Social services have been dealing with them since last year and told them to make improvements in how the child was being looked after.

“They then decided that the called-for improvements had not happened and took the child into care.”

The couple from the north of England had the baby using a surrogate mother in her 30s. She is believed to have been impregnated using the 65-year-old’s sperm and a donor egg.

The adoptive parents spent more than £100,000 on the procedure and used a clinic abroad as most in the UK would not deal with a couple their age.

The child’s British birth mother and her husband were named on the birth certificate, but they signed a parental order letting the older couple adopt.

Social services closely monitored the situation and, after the concerns were raised, the child was taken away and is thought to be in foster care.

The adoptive parents have failed in one bid to regain custody but are still fighting. They are thought to be allo-wed some contact in monitored visits.

The source said: “This is a very unusual situation. Although it is upsetting for all, social workers have done what they think is best for the child.”

The adoptive mother refused to comment, as did the couple’s local council.

I know one who cares for her great-grandchild most of the time. She’ll be 76 in June. She also adopted and raised the child’s mother.

I know many people in their 60s and 70s who are far more capable of raising children...

There are millions of grandparents in this country raising grandchildren due to the chaos that results when irresponsible unmarried people have children.

I don't see why the age of this couple is relevant to the situation.

“Buying and selling children is wrong, even if the government is also a can of worms.”
******************************************
Tell that to the child who now has life because of the yearnings of the parents (I.e., biological father and his wife) and who otherwise would not have been born.

The child’s mother is her grandchild.

I would want to know what the improvements were that were required before I jump on any bandwagon of government overreach.

Agreed. The couple spent a considerable sum to have this baby. It seems likely that income and living conditions would not be an issue. It's also obvious that they desperately wanted the baby, so abuse and neglect don't seem likely. That accounts for the usual triggers for social services intervention. I wonder what else could have been involved.

Back in the 1700s some British citizens got enough of the tyranny and rebelled and kcked some ass. May be time to do it again.

Most of the grandparents raising children in the 'hood are in their 30s.

What were the necessary ‘improvements’?
Funny how that pivotal detail is left out.
What? Was the 1 year old a girl who wanted to dress like a boy? Was the child ‘caught’ saying Grace before their lunchtime snack? I can’t see this couple being cruel or negligent after all the time, money and love they have already invested.

What if this was a baby who lost both parents in an accident and the grandparents, aged 63 and 65, were willing to raise the child?

It isn't.

“normally I hate the idea of the state stepping in and not knowing the details I am hesitant to say that it was th right thing to do but this couple having a child is very problematic in my eyes.”

I'm glad Abraham and Sara didn't feel that way.

That’s the British way, always doing what’s best for the child. Just like Charlie and just like Alfie. I wonder how long it will be before someone decides the child will be better off dead? /s

Just shows that liberalism is a mental disorder. That was great that you left. My family moved from Flushing in the mid 80’s but we still have family in NYC.

Really?

My guess is that most 70 year olds probably don’t have the energy required to do so. Even a lot of first time mothers in their 40s struggle with taking care of toddlers.

If you can, that’s great, but I doubt that that is the norm.
