I wanted one with a face MG 42 mounted in the back.
Just like in Rat Patrol.

Kind of like the Chevy Nova, which was dubbed No Va (It doesn’t go.) in Spanish speaking countries.

Kind of like the Chevy Nova, which was dubbed No Va (It doesnt go.) in Spanish speaking countries. That's an urban legend. It's also linguistically incorrect in Spanish. The Nova sold quite well in Mexico. It was sold under the name Chevrolet 400 in Argentina, and Acadian was the name used in Canada.

Aztec looked ridiculous. The really baffling part was that it was promoted as featuring an attached _tent_ - as though you’d want to camp in a way preventing your vehicle from going anywhere without completely dismantling your sleeping quarters first.

Pintos were mentioned in the article and it reminded me of that.
Anyways, you’re right. I’ve seen far worse looking cars on the road.

Th he Thing was a Volkswagen design from the beginning.

Ours was an automatic that would not go into reverse unless it was THOROUGHLY warmed up.
That meant that if you made the mistake of pulling into a parking spot, you had at least a 10-15 minute wait for it to warm up enough to be able to back out.

I first saw this in Europe on a choir tour. It made me think of the squashed human slaves in Phantasm.

Yeah. A female friend special-ordered one in Welch’s Grape purple way back. She loved it.
