So the protestors are angry because they want the hospital to let Alfie leave, but the hospital can't let Alfie leave because of the protestors? What is the fear? That the protestors WON'T let him leave now? The hospital makes no sense in its arguments. It seems like its advancing this argument out of pure spite to make it sound like Alfie has to die because of the protestors trying to keep him alive.

This is why doctors should wean people off of respirators. Patients breathing muscles get weak while on assist. If they wean, they give chance for muscles to strengthen. If just pull off, patients tend to die very quickly.
