We watched the one while they were out of town - never barked! (Gee - imagine that, in a house with caring adults and a kid and a big back yard to play in!) “You want him - you can have him!!”
Our second dog was a rescue from some group - it was a bit odd I thought, they had a donated office space given to them for the day. Various pickups and cars arrived in the morning and put the dogs into kennels in the vacant office space for the day. Some were late as they were coming from all different places around the state.
I don't recall how much we paid - maybe $250 for him with shots, etc. I don't recall any follow-up calls. (This was 8 years ago now). I do recall they said he was probably black lab, pointer, and Australian Sheppard or something. “Oh - he'll probably get to 40 pounds or so.”
We get it home and another neighbor who is a dog person looked at him and said - “Oh - black lab and great dane!” We looked online, and sure enough! We figure the rescue people didn't want to scare us off with a big dog (iirc we had given them the 40 pound idea.).
Of course now I'm glad we have a big black dog (80 pounds). Large size and his loud bark when someone comes to the door must factor in there somewhere.
Taking this even further, many people are choosing to not have children, but instead “adopting” (instead of purchasing or receiving) an animal, and pretending that the animal is their child or children, calling them their “children” or “furbabies” and being the animal’s “mommy” or “daddy”.
And then there are the “furries”. The “Eww factor” is strong with that one.
Yup. You got it.
I’ve had lots of dogs, GSD, border collies, pointers, dobes, my Mal is the easiest dog to train ever. She loves kids, is very protective (and does great bitework) and doesn’t shed like german shepherds. She’ll be 7 soon.
I am picky about dogs and was raised by a horse and hound man, so I believe in selective breeding rather than random breeding of dogs. I would no more get a rescue dog than I would try to make a cutting horse out of a donkey. There’s a reason people spend a hundred years breeding animals to produce certain characteristics. If only humans would do something similar, we’d eliminate a lot of problems.
What you describe is mentall illness.
A few of my wife's friends do this, and she gives them a pass or even frames it as cute.
I say "No, that is evidence of metal illness. Your friend is mentally ill."
Have you ever researched Merritt Clifton?
When one asks such a broad question in public forum, there is a reason. Usually the reason is that the asker has information to disseminate, or a point to make.
What do you wish to share?
I wish to share the notion that it is important to research the ‘experts’ upon whose conclusions you are basing your own conclusions.
It will be of greater value to you if you do the work of investigation rather than having someone else do it for you.
True point; thank you.
Anthropomorphizing taken to an extreme. (sp)/(syn)
Got him from a rescue as a puppy. The mother was a lab/border collie mix. After hearing some opinions and reviewing breed characteristics on google we think the father was a Plott hound. Smartest dog I've ever had. Very loyal and protective of the house and family. Wicked fast and will play fetch for hours.
Sometimes the best breeds are accidents.
