I'm not saying anything was disputed. I'm saying that there was always politics of a sort in the movies and people always saw politics in the movies.
I don't think female warriors resonate with the 14 year old boy demographic, (which is supposedly the target audience for this sort of stuff) at least not in the way of "I want to be like her."
Is that the only way things resonate? I never wanted to be Luke Skywalker or Princess Leia or even Han Solo, but I still enjoyed the pictures. If enough things get blown up it hardly matters which good guy does it.
