let me dumb it down for you. he knows that he's deeply unpopular with the base. the base controls the convention. the base is much less in control of the primary. in a primary, he can fool/delude/lie to people into voting for him.

thus, he almost certainly preferred the primary all along. it was by far his easiest path to success, and campaigning is what he does.
