You make an excellent point about his moral rule. It’s completely conservative, sensibly aware of the nasty tricks of the other side, and far seeing of potential future problems. Shows a good head.
As for Potus selecting him, that isn’t enough in my book. Potus seems to be constantly balancing factors as he makes decisions. Sometimes factors change. Sometimes information was missing in the initial balancing. So he fires them. He can’t fire Pence, but he can help corral him to minimize problems, if there are any. Which there might not really be. Pence is a politician, so he’ll always look for the advantage. But he knows that looking unsupportive will lose HIM support, so I expect him to keep to the straight and narrow.
