My personal POV about brain/religion.
Since the actual self is the soul, which is not a physical organ, the realization of God within a person is much deeper than any brain functioning. So the section of the brain they think is the seat of “religious belief” has nothing in fact to do with a person’s individual experiences or realization of God. God doesn’t manifest in a person, or speak to them, in the brain, but in the soul proper. Theoretical understanding, memorization, scriptural knowledge might be able to be erased or manipulated by messing with a person’s brain substance, but that is all.

I’ve seen articles on this tech for quite a while. My limited understanding is that they are mistaking an area that becomes active during spiritual experiences for the actual cause of the experience. Quite likely, IMO, that it is NOT a *cause*, but indication of a response.
Now, to venture into irony: what if they manage some non-invasive alteration of this brain function and instead of eradicating God, they eradicate any ability to gain spiritual satisfaction from deeply-held beliefs like climate change, communism, diversity, sustainability, et al???
Again, from a limited understanding, I believe some drugs (ayahuasca) provide a spiritual response. While the drug would still be present, maybe the receptors that provide the experience would be inactivated with this treatment.
OTOH, it is possible to experience God in a purely intellectual manner, without an emotionally ecstatic response.
