More of that anon. But, before we get to those four-letter fanfares, half-a-century ago this month - April 1968 - something rather unusual happened in the UK Top 40: An American got to Number One.
“Status Quo” is another one.
The only song most in the States are familiar with is “Pictures of Matchstick Men”, but they were one of the biggest rock acts in the UK for years.
Never heard of them.

a friend of mine, a horn player (clarinet), had the thrill of being called up to back Pops in an after hours session in NY. nothing but good things to say about Pops as man and musician. but he said you’d better know what you were doing when he called the tune. back then labels like “great” and “musical genius” were not thrown around like they are today.
