I've just assumed that anybody who has or asks for information about me can and will use it against me, so I am just naturally stingy. Asked for SSN at law school sign up, refuse. Okay, they say, and picked a number for me. Easy peasy.
I don't mind giving if they need it, like banks do for tax purposes. Life is more fun when you realize you don't have to do or give everything you are asked to do or give, and half the time the people making the demand don't know why they are making it, so it's time for some friendly banter about the deal at hand and not your life history.
