I worked in Venezuela back in the good days of the 70s. If I went to a bank, a store etc. I spoke Spanish to them. It was expected.

A doctor told me that after paying for a translator her left over revenue was $7 for a patient visit. That she was basically giving away free service when they needed a translator.
Why is it everyone elses fault they cannot understand you when you speak a foreign language in not your home country?

Yeah. When illegals come to ER with no insurance not only is the care free, we have to provide them translation services (MUST be professional) that run 100$ an hour. So that gets sucked out of the hospital too.

What kind of world do we live in where foreigners expect to go to another nation and demand that the locals speak THEIR language?

Americans think it is a universal human instinct to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It’s not. It seems natural to us because we live in a Bible-based Judeo-Christian culture.
We think the Protestant work ethic is universal. It’s not. My town was full of young men doing nothing. They were waiting for a government job. There was no private enterprise. Private business was not illegal, just impossible, given the nightmare of a third-world bureaucratic kleptocracy.
