We used to make matchstick rockets as kids. Just sneak some aluminum foil from mom, wrap the tip, cook it, and watch it fly. We were thrilled when it did, which was about one time in 100. Ah, the simple joy of playing with matches.
We used to cover white-head matches with tin-foil and shoot them out of a BB-gun. They would explode when shot against a hard surface, and they would also cause a fire.
My brothers taught me how to do that. We would use a paper clip both to form the rocket nozzle and as the launch pad.
MOM’S CARPET
1 in 100 success rate.
The improvised design uses a needle along the match head.
Wrap tinfoil around head and needle.
Pull out needle.
Aim “rocket” at 45 degree angle.
Heat foil with lighter.
The rocket consistently flys 10 feet.
Just be careful with mother’s carpet not to burn holes. But they are a fun evening of kitchen rocketry.
