Like the last two painters, this is pure Academic. Alma-Tadema studied at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium before moving to England. A late starter, the early paintings date from when he was 19. This was another of the favorite painters of my childhood. Blessings on a painter who dates his work! Since these were the paintings I loved him for, I skipped his portraits. He started out doing Medieval and decided it wasn't getting any interest, so he switched to Greek and Roman with a soupcon of Egyptian. His wife Laura was also a painter. I believe I also read that he added the Alma to Tadema to get his name listed early in catalogs.

Saxophone is actually a good instrument for archaic music. Something about the bore is conical, vs. cylindrical on a clarinet, it makes it take a lot of discipline to keep a uniform timbre and pitch on the clarinet. I’ve heard a saxophone trio at CSUS Sacramento do old music, very nice.

Yes, he turned to the Greek and Roman world following a visit to Pompeii. Exotic and sensuous scenes. Love the Bach on Sax.

Wish I knew some dates on this. The saxophone family was invented by the Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax in 1840. When was it used for listening and what music. The masters never wrote anything in the orchestra for the instrument because it wasn’t invented till long after a vast majority of the masters were dead. About the only three classical writers left during this time were the Gershwins and Rachmaninoff.
