The center ‘personage’ in that huge sculpture behind the Pope looks like a demonic fallen angel/ET type creature. Yuck.
The Vatican says that the sculpture represents "Christ raising from the dead" - but even the most ardent defenders are forced to admit that the entire monstrosity looks creepy and hellish.
It is located in Audience Hall in the Vatican, which is not open to the general public. When we were there on tour, we were not permitted entrance.
Some people are saying that these images must be photo shopped or altered. They are not. There are many, many videos and photos on the web that document this.
From the back of the hall, Audience hall's stage does look like a serpent.
