Have you given Mate with Compiz a try? That is what I run on Fedora. Not exactly KDE, but you can install KDE apps (I use both konsole and kate). I like the eye-candy whirly-giggy stuff that Compiz adds, and it makes switching desktops just a click or a slide.

I must not be paying attention. I didn't know they were dumping KDE. When is that happening? That's suckage for me, as I really prefer KDE and have been using it since I moved from CDE (real old-timers will recognise that ghastly environment.
