Reason 2 - It serves as a lesson to people who might be tempted to follow the acts of the bad guy. This is the weaker of the two arguments, as it provides a way to commit suicide by cop while taking out as many others as possible.
Don't get me wrong--I'm all for the death penalty, if not just taking them out on the scene.

The death penalty does nothing to deter crime. For it to be effective the trial needs to be "speedy" and the sentence carried out immediately. A typical "death penalty" verdict ultimately costs the public millions of dollars in appeals and prison amenities for the convicted who will likely sit on death row for 20 years.........
As a side note, I know a guy who was arrested back in July of 2016 for impersonating a federal agent (His second offense, the first one resulted in 3 years in prison) He never went to trial until early this past December.......a year and a half after he was arrested......
