I'm feeling like hearing some interesting music that I've never heard before, so I thought I'd start a thread on FReeper's favorite underrated bands. Post several good examples of their music and why you feel they're underrated. Should be fun.
The Jayhawks
Whiskeytown
Randy Rogers Band
The Electric Prunes.
Marillion (Fish-era)
Pandora introduced me to Franz Ferdinand several years ago and I do enjoy their music. Here’s their best-known tune:
Franz Ferdinand - “Take Me Out”
Wow, it’s like John Cage or something for a few minutes there, very abstract, then breaks into sort of retro-funk. Very cool.
>Tontos Expanding Headband.
Silver Apples
Gryphon
Sky
Gong
Incredible String Band
Mike Oldfield
Steeleye Span
Wintergarten
Just to name a few.
JJ Cale
Under rated. Great musicians.
Under rated. Great musicians.
Proto-Led Zeppelin, love me some Yardbirds. Here’s a live TV performance, looks like Shindig.
The Yardbirds - “For Your Love”
Spandaeu Ballet...
I’ll see your Spandau Ballet and raise you OMD.
Kind of hard to buttonhole these guys, punky maybe a little Lou Reed combined with Wendy O going on?
Human Sexual Response - “Jackie Onassis”
Badfinger.
always enjoyed the social dis version of johnny cash’s Ring of Fire

-PJ
OK, don’t want to appear to be a snob. Here’s a somewhat offbeat Led Zeppelin track, it’s like medieval chamber music with a country twang and I’ve always loved it.
Led Zeppelin - “Tangerine”
Trapeze. Song: Black Cloud
Captain Beyond, their entire first album
Dixie Dregs. Song: heck, all of them!
And if you haven’t heard Samantha Fish you really need to check her out.
Not underrated, but new and awesome!
