LOS ANGELES -
Joe Panik homered off Clayton Kershaw in the fifth inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 on Thursday, dealing the three-time NL Cy Young Award winner his first loss in his franchise-record eighth consecutive opening day start.
It was the first run allowed this year by Kershaw, including spring training. The seven hits given up by the left-hander are the most off him on opening day, when he is 5-1.
Kershaw struck out seven and walked two in six innings.
Andrew McCutchen, acquired from Pittsburgh during the offseason, was 1 for 4 with a double in his Giants debut. Evan Longoria, obtained by San Francisco from Tampa Bay, was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.
San Francisco's pitching stood out against the defending NL champions, with replacements in the starting and closing roles.

Spring is here, and life begins anew.
Every fan, every team is fresh and optimistic.
Play Ball!
"With the late afternoon Sun glistening off the helmets of the batters as the American flag waves in the light breeze."-Vin Scully, circa 2008.
Not every fan! Im fairly pessimistic about my team this season. Hopefully, theyll surprise, but they had a dismal spring and have a really shaky bullpen. Maybe a couple of the new relievers will make a difference.
Ah, so that was the reason for traffic.
“Ah, so that was the reason for traffic.”
There is no better reason.
Thank God baseball is finally here. Hope McCutcheon catches on for the Giants
GO GIANTS!!!
Watched it on the tube. Thought the Gigantes would lose with Strickland expected to save the game. It happened. They were lucky.
Happy baseball is here again...but your team is not my team.
Go Dodgers!
A six hit shutout is usually a testament to pitching.
It may be anomalous, but probably not lucky.
Yeah, the Dodgers are the odds-on favorites to win the West again this year.
But, it’s baseball. So nobody knows.
I still wish Kershaw (a wonderful, Christian athlete) started the final game of the last world series! Hope Dodgers can have their moment again. Yay L.A. <3
You just made me happy!
Cutch hit a nice line drive double along the first baseline. He typically has a rather slow season start. Giants look to be contenders in 2018.
I have no clue!
But weaker by the glass...
lol
I expect the Rangers to lose over 100 games this year.
