When criticized, Chafee was known to wave his medals in people’s face and declare that his WWII/Korea service (for which I cannot locate any combat awards) made his positions morally superior.

Did he really wave his medals in anybody's face?

The guy fought on Guadalcanal and Okinawa, in China and in Korea, and the troops he led respected him.

Maybe he deserves better than to have his lack of medals waved in his face.
