I got my nine-year old son to watch Great Expectations by selling it as creepy, and then described Miss Havisham. Then, in the BBC version we saw, they got her all wrong! First, Gillian Anderson interpreted the role all wrong, too much of the wisp. Second, the book makes it clear that MIss Havisham had only one show on, as if she got the news while dressing. The Anderson version had her wearing both shoes. One shoe is MUCH more jarring.
My son wound up being okay with it despite these and other weaknesses.

Try the brilliant David Lean version. Of course, your boy probably doesn’t like black and white. Most kids don’t.
