Agree United is one of the worst airlines out there, I had to fly on them frequently from Hong Kong.
I would get an occasional reprieve from the warden and fly Cathay, it was amazing the difference.

I flew United twice to Việt Nam. Both times I lost my checked bags. The second time my wife back in Florida got on the phone and started calling. After many many shunts to different and many repeated digital phone answerings and a few unhelpful live clerks a warehosue guy in Chicago picked up the phone. She repeated her requests for information. The fellow said that yes, he had seen the bag (my bags are always distinctive and easily spotted) and he was sure United would get them back to us in a week or ten days. Instead, we got a letter from UAL stating that their legal department had determined that UAL had no liability and therefore the "items would not be returned" and there would be no compensation. The arrogance of that is breathtaking.
The flight was miserable. The snacks consisted of three or four peanuts twice and when I asked for some water was told I had received my water not an hour before. The stewardesses tended to be fat and one of them totally blocked the aisle. There was no getting past her if you needed to go to the head. All had an attitude that seemed to say that they thought of the passengers as the burden they had to bear to wear spiffy uniforms and go to exotic places.
It didn't help my own perceptions that I had previously flown on KAL and on Hàng Không Việt Nam where the attitude of the staff is that they really want you to fly on their airplanes again. Delta was not great but bearable until they partnered with ANA and adopted the approaches and attitudes of ANA. Now Delta is a pleasure to fly, at least over the Pacific, like the Asian planes.
