Flat Screen with Blu-Ray/DVD player combo recommendation

A simple vanity post seeking recommendations from FReepers.

I gave up TV twenty years ago. But I still like watching DVDs. The player on the computer I watch mine on is giving out. I’d like to move on to a flat screen/player combo for both DVDs and Blu-Ray discs that’s in the 36” diagonal range. Larger is really no problem, but a huge, wall-mounted flat screen isn’t my style. Surround-sound and all that aren’t important to me either (good fidelity stereo is plenty nice for me.) My tastes are pretty simple that way.

My home entertainment-fu is weak, so the best brands/models are unknown to me and a visit to a local Fry’s was disappointing.

Can anyone offer a simple/straightforward recommendation?

Thanks to everyone for their thoughtful replies! Still not decided, but I feel well-armed to get a TV and a player that will do all the simple things I want and a lot more for a lot less than I was fearing it would be. I know what to look for. I’ll report back when I have my units and let you know how it turned out.

No need to answer my question since the answer is complicated. LOL!

I don't think I would ever notice any difference if they were both side by side. It's all in the specs I guess.......

The picture is great tho, I'm going to have to watch a blu ray video on it some day.

I get all my DVD's from the library then copy them for future viewing. No blu rays because I don't have the software needed to copy them........

My daughter needed a tv for her new townhome, so we went to Best Buy expecting to get a Visio. Instead we bought a TCL brand. It’s a 43 inch 4K tv with Roku for only $300. I was skeptical of an unknown brand, but I did some research and found the are a $15 billion company with big presence in Asian markets. Their picture quality is rated higher than Vizio and the overall quality rating was high. She’s been very happy with it. You may want to consider this unknown brand. I did buy her the five year extended warranty just in case. 😉

I’m not a techie so not offering advice...Just what I did...

But I bought a 55” 4K Vizio from Costco 4 years ago and still going strong...Picture is sharp and crisp, colors are vivid...Has built in Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, YouTube, etc...Which is mostly what I watch, and mostly for movies...They were running a sale and got a good price...

Teamed it with a Samsung Blu-Ray and picture quality is great...I tend to look at the on screen pic in making a comparison more than specs but that’s just me...

I have 2 Vizio big screens, older one 10 years and trouble free...Might be worth a look...Good luck...

One more thing: I’ve noticed that “Regions” are a thing for discs and their players. There are players that I’ve seen on amazon that are “Region Free” and are supposed to allow you to play a disc from any region in the world. I’ve seen that some old UK shows, like The New Avengers, have not yet been made for Region 1 (US) or are extremely hard to find, but are readily available for Region 2 (Western Europe). With a region free player, that shouldn’t be an issue.

Does anyone have any experience with Region Free players?
