That Harrier (especially the first British model) was supposed to be the most difficult to fly piece of equipment ever built. Any failure of any kind, equipment or pilot, usually resulted in a crash.

It has the highest operational accident rate of any US aircraft in the inventory. During a recent airshow in Yuma the narrator described flying it was like balancing on a beach ball while rubbing your stomach and patting you head and while reciting the alphabet backwards.

My neighbor said you had to always be thinking and acting ahead of it when flying. In hover it is more difficult to control than a helicopter. In forward flight it even has quirks in the envelope that make it dangerous.
