The Duke of Cambridge bestowed the honour on the Liverpool-born star at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
"It means a lot actually," the musician told the BBC. "It means recognition for the things we've done. I was really pleased to accept this."
The honour comes 53 years after the Beatles were all awarded the MBE - and Starr said he had missed his bandmates' companionship this time round.
"I was a bit shaky today on my own," he said.

Asked whether he wanted to be known as Sir Ringo, the musician, whose real name is Richard Starkey, replied: "I don't know yet. It's new and I don't know how you use it properly."
Turning to BBC reporter Colin Paterson, he added: "But I expect you to use it."
The 77-year-old added he knew exactly what he'd do with his medal.
"I'll be wearing it at breakfast," he joked.
His honour comes 21 years after fellow Beatle Paul McCartney was knighted.
Starr said the pair had met for dinner last week in Los Angeles, and Sir Paul had offered him some advice for the ceremony: "Keep smiling."
Other people receiving honours at Tuesday's ceremony included authors Jilly Cooper and Michael Morpurgo, former Scottish rugby player John "Ian" McLauchlan, Welsh rugby player Sam Warburton and foster carer Anne Shaw.

“The View” - well, that’s an oxymoron of a title, for sure!
Aka - The Vagina Demagogues.
Ringo was the catalyst for the band's rise from obscurity. That picture (and I know, you know the one I'm talking about) in the Cavern Club with Pete Best behind the other 3, has Nowhere'sVille written all over it. Brian Epstein may have gotten them dressed but Ringo's rhythm put them on the map.
Dear Queen Elizabeth:
Once again, I note with regret, that you have overlooked Rick Rescorla when bestowing knighthood. As I know you know, Rick Rescorla was a famous soldier from Cornwall who distinguished himself as a warrior for many decades. It is his picture that appears on the cover of the now classic book We Were Soldiers Once And Young. He is also the man credited with saving 2700 lives during the World Trade Center attack on 9/11 and losing his own life in the process. His life was the epitome of knightly virtue he lived by the knightly code he slew dragons and he saved damsels in distress. It is now 17 years after he died his noble death, and you have not seen fit to honor him with a knighthood. Instead, you bestow this great honor on entertainers, and athletes, and others. I do not understand how Elton John can be a knight while Rick Rescorla is ignored. This oversight cheapens the honor of knighthood. I guess you have overlooked him because he does not dress in pink feathers and play the piano for you.
I think his former hair dressing skills “helped” too, based on today’s photos.
I don’t see what the point was of giving yet another tribute to Ringo. One would think they had received every honorific known to western man, excepting, for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Maybe this event happened along with something else, such as the start of a new business venture now accepting investors.
Yeah me too. THere are a couple of movies on Netflix I’ve seen lately too.
Ringo and Paul are both vegans. There must be something to it,when you reach a certain age. Last year,we did a Beatle tour of Liverpool and it was wonderful!
Check out her dulcet tones in the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.
It appears that John told the Stones that I'll perform as long as Yoko can sing.
As she sings, the back up musicians (Clapton, Mitch Mitchell etc) have this stunned, and pained, look on their faces.
I think it was a blessing that most in this concert were stoned.
I saw the Circque de Soliel show Love in Vegas a couple weeks ago. If you love Beatle music, you have to see it. It was an incredible show. Ive been listening to more of Channel 18 on Sirius lately, the Beatles channel. I never seem to tire of their music.
I would agree that eating less meat is probably healthier than eating too much meat. But I don’t think that eliminating meat entirely is as healthy as eating a moderate amount of meat.
visual and “performance” artist.
She was quite well known in her own right before she hooked up with John. Several ‘installations’ and shows, very highly regarded in her particular circle.
Keef’s been clean for longer than some rockers have been alive.
But I think the real secret is that he enjoys life.
John was happiest with May Pang and she was big in bringing John back into Julian’s life and also made a great friend connection with Cynthia. May and Cynthia are still friends to this day and Julian remembers he started to have a father in his life when they were with May. May and Cynthia are both beautiful inside and out.
John did not want to go back to Yoko but told May he had to sort out some business dealings with Yoko and that don’t worry, he would be back for sure.
But Yoko had some mystical hold over him. Perhaps something occult because in 1980 John was openly coming out for Christ and wanting to return to his roots in England. His English family was all excited they were going to have Johnny back again. And then he was murdered.
If only he had been able to get back to May Pang.
Wings? Proof that Paul is dead.
I have a theory.
Yoko ordered the hit on John and had Chapman do it.
I have no proof, it’s just a suspicion. John was changing, I even heard he was a fan of Ronald Reagan. Yoko couldn’t have that, it would ruin his legacy as an Icon of the Left.
Could someone tell us the differences between a knight, a duke, a lord, and a squirrel-squire?
Let’s not forget earl and viscount........
And while we are at it, can one really be a Duke of Earl?
