Wehr = war (As in Wehrmacht = German Army). Krieg is German for war. As in Blitzkrieg - lightning war.
Wehr is more along the lines of force. Which is as you described - German Army. Wehrmacht means armed forces or defense force, depending on point of view. Gewehr means rifle (basically anything not select-fire), and Sturmgewehr means assault rifle (which was select-fire).
