Valentina DAlessandro was at a party with a few girlfriends in 2013 when one of them got sick. They accepted another teenagers offer to drive them home in his red Mustang.
In a commercial area of Wilmington, at the intersection of two four-lane boulevards, a car pulled up alongside the Mustang.
The race began.
Minutes later, Valentina, 16, was dead, her body wedged in a back seat window following a crash. Police found her high school identification card at the scene.

WE need common sense car control laws NOW! I call on California to pass a law making it illegal to possess a car with more than four cylinders and which can exceed 55 mph. No one really needs to go faster than that right. A law also that requires a kill switch that safely stops any vehicle which exceeds the posted speed limit by 10 mph. Require that a computerized record be kept by any vehicle driven by anyone 18 yo or younger and the record be submitted to the DMV yearly and repeated or excessive repeated speed cause a offender to lose driving privileges. Anyone other that exempt First Responseders and members of the states legislature (Can't expect them to come under a law meant for little people). Anyone owning a vehicle capable of speeds over 55 mph must have it permanent throttled or the vehicle will be subject to confiscation.
We need to do this now for the 'children'!
If it saves just one life...
This article is street-racist. They are undocumented street races, not illegal.
The first ever car race happened 10 minutes after the second car was built. People drive, people race.
I once beat a guy who had a short nascar career years later.
I have to be brutally honest here...
The headline suggests that, that's a bad thing.
Make brutally stupid choices, reap brutally stupid consequences.
There are not many innocent victims here.
Just mostly innocent grossly immature ones.
And as the ultimate blow to our entire society, many of these these immature victims actually vote; some perhaps several times...
Also another law: anyone under the age of 21 caught driving with a phone or other electronic device capable of text messaging will have drivers licences suspended and the phone or electronic device as well as the vehicle impounded. I could save one child. well it could.
Anyone still in High School should have to put “Student Driver” signs on their cars.
just one of the many examples we have that our civilized society is in anger of collapsing.
I actually beat Jeff Gordon in a race when we were in HS...
sure, it was a cross-country meet for our schools, but I still brag about it to this day.
We don’t need any more laws.
Racing is illegal.
Speeding is illegal.
Drugs are illegal.
The police are not enforcing existing laws. Why have more?
I could save one child! it’s for the children silly.
In the 60’s we used a rural highway with a long straight stretch. Lookout cars were posted at the beginning and end and were to signal if an approaching car was coming. Spectators watched from a cemetery just about the end of the race. Never had an accident. Racing ended when a new housing development started and a local drag strip opened which drew the big guns. Today’s youth are willing to race anywhere with no concern for others. Just another sign of the times.
I would go along with 18 or older for drivers licenses. Even at that age for many is too young nowadays. The grave yards are full of young people who were under 18 when killed.
2 ton machines and speed kill a lot of them.
It’s not the illegal street racing I was referring to. It’s the taking over of roads and blocking freeways. Street racing has been around for longer than me but when I was young we always went in the country to race on rural deserted roads. If one cop would have showed up we would have scattered.
Wow, I just watched him on TV
Todays reality cop shows up something illegal going on they scatter
Yep
Two of my HS buddies included
Yep..I think it’s happened to most everyone’s high school buddies.
Nowadays most teens and young adults lack the experience and maturity to get behind the wheel at 16 and 17. I recall one case not long ago when a car with 4 high schoolers were doing about 100 through a residential neighborhood, lost control, hit parked cars, then ended up broadside into a big tree. It looked like an aircraft crash. Really ugly.
“WE need”
They’ve been working on this.
Driverless cars will eventually be mandatory.
Best way to control the public’s movement.
