Actually he did say this,.....where I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody” and not “lose any voters......he was referencing how the polls said his voters were loyal....so loyal...and Trump then said his quote......it was meant as a reference to how loyal, his own voters were, but he did say those words. .. . https://youtu.be/rMmiLWDpCno

Hmmmm . . . I listened to it twice. . . kinda thinking Big Redd is correct
Trump says several times . . . "They say" obviously referring to the media. With that pause before the comment it appears Trump is now embellishing/exaggerating press comments.
In context, the statement is said in reference to what the press says about him, not what he believes to be true.
Having said that, I would agree with you . . . it is an unforced error, while trying to be funny. Most, like myself did not know the context of him using that and I believed he said it on its own merit.

Actually he did say this,.....where I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and not lose any voters......he was referencing how the polls said his voters were loyal....so loyal...and Trump then said his quote......it was meant as a reference to how loyal, his own voters were, but he did say those words. .. . https://youtu.be/rMmiLWDpCno
"You know what else they say about my people? The polls, they say I have the most loyal people--did you ever see that?--where I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose any voters, okay. It's like, incredible. No, they say Trump's voters are, by far..."
He starts interrupting himself here, and it's hard to transcribe what he's saying without it sounding incoherent. LOL
So, yeah, he's saying "they say" he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue etc. He's not saying that he himself thinks that.
