I often think of the lead-up to the Spanish Civil War, which has been whitewashed by leftist historians. The leftist government was out of control, destroying churches, murdering priests, closing private schools, confiscating private property, censoring dissent: they were doing many of the things that today's left fantasizes about doing.

The left today failed to learn one of the most obvious lessons of the Spanish Civil War: Once the communists were more oppressive than the government they replaced, people lost heart quickly, and could only be forced to fight at the point of a gun (Barcelona fell without a defense). Another lesson is at work in Venezuela today: When people aren’t allowed to profit from hard work, they stop working, This led to starvation in the republic as the war went on, and is leading to starvation in Venezuela today. If you try to force butchers and bakers to work for free, they stop working (at least publicly).
