Tariffs: Trump’s Prelude to Ending Unfair Trade Practices

President Donald Trump’s new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum look like an effort that goes beyond its stated rationale of preserving national security. The tariffs could be the first of a number of initiatives by the Trump administration to retaliate against unfair foreign trade practices.

“We’re going to see who’s treating us fairly, who’s not treating us fairly,” Trump said at the White House on March 8 while rolling out the new trade barriers.

Trump signed orders imposing a 25 percent tariff on imported steel and a 10 percent tariff on imported aluminum. However, he has kept the doors open to negotiations.

“America will remain open to modifying or removing the tariffs for individual nations,” said Trump.

I agree.

China is a first for America. Our presidents have been completely unprepared to deal with the country, for the entire last generation.

The country is not like America. In fact, China and America are in many ways opposites. But in other ways, similar. The thing is the ways we are different are critical, and not too many people have thus far been focused on those.

China is HUGE, in population. Not big. HUGE. It is like five Americas, all packed into the same size as America. It is also NOT a democracy. It is a completely autocratic system, with ONE leader. Who is not elected. He has absolute power.

For the entire last generation and a half, everyone has been operating as if China is like America.

Big mistake. The differences are very, very significant.

Trump seems to (maybe) get that. He seems to be the first leader we have had, who has an idea.

EVERYONE has been selling out America. Both parties. Everyone.

Trump however has quite a huge job in front of him. Turning our relationship back to a mutually beneficial relationship will be a massive task.

I don’t know if it can be done. But Trump seems to be on the right path, thus far.

People, give the guy credit. He’s the first champion America has had, for a very long time.
