Evidently the dog's owner stuffed the dog into a sealed carry on bag, and not into a proper travel crate. What was she thinking?

Bingo. and it only took 5 posts before a thinking person asked the appropriate question. What about this bag the family put their dog into as they boarded an airplane. How was the dog supposed to breathe in a sealed carry on bag and why did they even bring a dog on an airplane?

I am not excusing the airline. If they knowingly stuffed a sealed bag carrying a dog they should be held responsible.

One doesn't have to take sides in a stupid case like this. BOTH sides were at fault.

Was THIS the bag the family placed a dog into to board an airplane?

You can see from the picture of the dead dog that at least one side was or had netting. Flat nosed dogs don’t breathe well and overheat easily. Both could have killed the dog in that confined and unventilated baggage compartment.
