He managed to take an unpleasant and anti-Christian (and indeed, anti-Semitic) stage production and turn it into a joyous spectacle on film.
If you ever see the video of the theater show, it is mean-spirited and ugly.
And this particular number was treated brilliantly as he gives Elleman’s voice a chance to shine by not shying away from her non-glamourous physical appearance. Truly a beautiful job by all involved.

If that is true, then the blasphemy is purposeful. By that, I mean it is an attempt to slander Christianity by inferring that good includes a component of sexual confusion — rides it in on Jesus’ approval of Mary Magdalene.
