“The 17th is the “Let’s just screw this whole thing up” amendment.”...........

The “Law Of Our Land”. This country and its Constitution has survived for a long, long time, even though there have been numerous attempts to completely void or disregard that document. Are there problem here in our country? Yes. Do we need to change that document? NO!!

If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

Implicit in the right to life is the right to self-defense. A right that can’t be defended is a right in name only.

Repealing the 17th would return the function of the Senate back to its original intent.

Could be, but in reality, they have everything they wanted in the ERA already.

Statehood-like representation for DC??? Absurd.

DC should NEVER have ANY permanent residents.

If you please, it would be helpful to your fellow FReepers to edit OUT the extraneous lines in your ‘cut&paste’ that are probably hyperlinks to other articles. Things like Trump & Kim and Billy Graham walking a line take away interest from valid talking points.

Thank you

I definitely don’t want any of the current crop of asshats tinkering with that masterpiece. They are not worthy or capable. Kill all the lawyers.

1. The oldest is the Titles of Nobility Amendment, first sent to the states in 1810 on the verge of the second war with Great Britain (to be known as the War of 1812). It provided that any American citizen who accepted or received any title of nobility from a foreign power (or accepted any gift from such a power without the consent of Congress) would forfeit his or her American citizenship.

Actually the way it was written it Stripped Citizenship and All rights from ANYONE that was a Member of a BAR Association, Yes LAWYERS!! No Voting, No holding ANY elected office. Lawyers are NOT licensed by the Government, they are licensed by a Private Organization and the Government requires that Private License.

see The Missing 13th Amendment

Which would do exactly....squat.

The only time, in recent memory, the State(s) attempted to assert their (rightful) 9th/10th powers were in the civil rights era (not saying deseg. was good/proper) and recently in the (illegal) immigration battle.

Else, they have (illegally) absconded their roles to Fedzilla; like Congress has done to the Judicial, Executive and bureaucratic state.

Good article for Federalist/Anti-Federalist ping. It’s the first time I’ve encountered all this info in one place.

I assume you support representative government.

Since the Constitution acts directly on both the people and the states, both must have a seat at the legislative table. It makes as much sense to deny the people a direct say in government . . . no sense at all.

Now the 17A is Constitutional, but like the 18A, it was a mistake, and a big one far worse than the 18A.
