It's possible that there are people who still associate magnetic pole shift (which goes on all the time) with a shift of the physical pole. Often enough coverage of these magnetic pole drifts are written up that way by what passes for journalists.

The book "5/5/2000" has more in common with the earlier book "The Jupiter Effect". Both claimed planetary alignments would have direct impact on the Earth's surface (tectonic plates in the Gribbin book, a shift of the physical pole in the Noone book). Neither one turned out to be correct.
