Three teachers have been charged after police said they distributed gummy bears with melatonin to kids without parental consent at a Des Plaines day care center last Friday.
Officers arrived Friday afternoon to the Kiddie Junction Daycare Center at 1619 E. Oakton Street after a report of a suspicious incident. Police said that gummy bears with melatonin were given to a class of 2 year olds to get them to calm down before nap time without parental authorization.
Police said that three teachers admitted distributing melatonin to the children and did not think it was inappropriate as they were an over-the-counter sleep aid.
The parents of each child at the daycare were contacted by police about the situation.
Three teachers, 32-year-old Kristen Lauletta of Niles, 19-year-old Jessica Heyse of Des Plaines and 25-year-old Ashley Helfenbein of Chicago, have each been charged with two counts of endangering the life or health of a child and two counts of battery. The teachers are scheduled to appear in court on April 4.
Police said the management of Kiddie Junction were helpful and assisted with the investigation.

Cmon ladies, dont do stupid stuff.

Got something better for them.
It’s sugar free!
Poppies!
It’d be worth it.
The kids would be wuite immobile.
And before anyone complains, I never claimed to be lawful good..
But if they had sent the kids to a sex-change clinic and had their privates lopped off without telling the parents, the PARENTS would have been arrested for protesting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Or if they had given the 6 year olds a class in fist *******!!!!! or put hijabs on all the girls and had them all bowing to mecca and yelling “allahu aknbar”!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Arrested over this?
They must not have had the proper dossage figured out. It was a rather dumb thing to do on their part.
This is a little silly. Melatonin is an innocuous, natural substance. The sugar in the gummy bears is far more damaging to the little tykes than the melatonin.
Some of the funniest reviews on Amazon....
Not the teachers decision.
They should be fired.
Parents put their kids in daycare under the *care* of strangers and expect good things to happen?
Easy solution.
Don’t put your kids in day care.
And yes, those day care workers should be charged and convicted.
It’s not their place to medicate someone else’s children, no matter how *natural* it is.
I wonder how the parents found out.....
Good question as to how they found out. Facebook ? Lol
OMG...melatonin is a gateway drug.
As a parent, melatonin is just one more tool in my toolbox.
If she does not jump on the trampoline and get exercise, my 6 year old is a wild-assed feral animal who will stay up all night.
I asked the kid doc about sleep aids, and she thought I meant vodka or the like. When I corrected her and said melatonin, the doc laughed in my face.
She even gave the go ahead to give it to my toddler.
I have a tiny new baby also. She’s too young for melatonin, so I’m considering Lime-A-Ritas.
A woman I taught with gave her special-ed kids some sugar-free gummi bears as a special treat. Not enough to cause epic results, but when she read the Amazon reviews, which I thoughtfully provided her, she was horrified as to what might have happened. Thing is, she’s the nicest, sweetest person you could imagine.
LOL. I drank so much coffee when I was nursing that the babies had lattes.
I have a hyperactive dog I give melatonin to. Melatonin won’t hurt anyone.
I’ll be darned——I never thought of it for hyper dogs.

Melatonin is a dietary supplement purported to help people sleep, it’s not a drug. While I wouldn’t be happy that daycare workers did this to my child without my consent, it’s not quite the issue that is being put forth. Might as well get upset about sugary treats making them hyper, it’s on the same level. Careful which side you land on, I smell the FDA wanting to extend their regulatory reach.
Just make sure it’s pure melatonin. Some formulations add other stuff that is not good for them. I was giving mine some I bought at the Dollar Tree because it was nothing but melatonin and valerian root, all in the exact dosage for her weight.
