My fathers family were farmers, some still are.
My dad was career Navy and was home on leave, 7 Dec 1941.
No phones in the area (SW Ohio)Put on his uniform and hitchhiked into Cincinnati for further orders.
Well into the 1960’s they still had party lines.
Don’t recall any crank phones, but many still had a HAND PUMP on the kitchen sink.
Scotsmen all, no need for some expensive plaything, the old pump worked just fine.

Every Ipad like device, every Google account has phone number attached to it. There is money to be made for people to "mine" for live numbers. I bet they have a Lobbyist that pays well too.
