Without Iran, Syria (especially Assad Jr.) could have been enticed to join Egypt's (Sadat's) grand Peace with Israel, and the Iran - Iraq war would have been highly unlikely, and Lebanon would likely have been able to continue it's Christian - Muslim sharing of power.
