Afraid of aiming too well and getting fired? Maybe each hoped one of the others would hit him.

I find it interesting the the “hit” percentage for legally armed civilians has always been higher than that of law enforcement officers.

65 shots fired and they still didn't even graze the perp?
That police department must be totally "gay".

Here is a you tube of the incident:
65 shots in 15 seconds
Just to be fair to the cops................ the man was inside an RV, they were essentially firing at random.

I’m giving the seeming lack of accuracy of the police gunfire some leeway due to the fact that they were shooting into the RV, apparently in hopes of hitting the suspect. I also think of their shots as supressive fire to keep the criminal from firing back at them. Since he apparently surrendered, I would say that they achieved their mission of apprehending the criminal.

Watching the video: the cops hear the shot from inside the RV, and then proceed to ventilate the vehicle with 65 shots, with the cops unable to know, and evidently not caring, who else might be inside the RV.

About 20 years ago I used to have a lot of contact with an elderly bailiff, who as a younger officer worked at everything from a highway patrol trooper, up to police chief. He was no fan of semiautomatic in police hands, and received a special dispensation to keep his revolver, or "wheel gun" as he called it, when the department switched to Glocks. He often expressed the opinion, usually through a cloud of cigarette smoke, that "If an officer needs more than six shots, he needs more than a pistol. All those high capacity automatics do is encourage you to shoot without stopping to aim."
I've never been a cop, and if I ever were to be, I expect that I would want all the ammunition possible. And a bearer carrying more ammunition, and perhaps a ballistic shield.
But every time I read one of these of the stories, I wonder if perhaps the old guy was right.
