It has been pretty cold, high in the 30s low in the teens, so I covered my arugula with sheets. Today it’s going to be high in the 40s low in the 20s. Would it be OK if I just leave those sheets on? I’m getting tired of removing them and then putting them back before nightfall. I would only leave them on today and then take them off tomorrow since the weather will be warming up a bit.

Leaving them on should be fine. They’ll just think its a very cloudy day.

Okay thanks. I like the way you do a mind-meld with the plants :-)

I don’t know about sheets. I use row covers, that allow sunshine and allow the plant to breathe. If more than the row cover is needed, I put straw on top of the row cover. This allows me to roll it up to the edge and let full sunshine in on warm days when we are in 50s and then roll it back when freezing and snow is expected.

I just left them on last night, I’ll go uncover them in a few hours when it’s warm enough for me to want to go out.

I’d love to get real covers, and maybe I will for next year and now that I know lettuce and arugula grow so well here in the winter. I did look at them but they are so expensive! Did you find an economical source for them? And how often do the material on the covers need to be replaced?

I’m careful with mine and they last several years.

However, if hubby “borrows” one—it’s a goner for sure-not to be touched with a 10 ft. pole.

Styptic powder, that stuff you have on hand if you have pets that get their nails trimmed and it coagulates the blood, would be a great thing to have in a prepping situation. Or we might have a cut but can’t get medical attention, even if small. Or perhaps some kind of dental issue.

Sounds like what my husband would do. I definitely separate our gardening tools. He leaves his out in the rain, they are all rusty and nicked. Mine are pristine and put back exactly where I know they are.

Same here—but it’s hard. I made it a point to buy all yellow handles-and keep them inside the greenhouse. He went a bought a rake with a yellow handle-sigh.

He borrowed my shovel and left it out—end is now rusty. I had an extremely nice pair of trimmers one for garden herbs and other small stuff. One was for tree branches and shrubs-he lost them both. I have to remind myself now and then-people are more important than things. LOL

Paint the handle on his rake.

“I have to remind myself now and then-people are more important than things. LOL”

That’s a good idea, I will try to think of it in those terms. It’s better than being mad.

I try to buy everything pink, he leaves those items alone, lol. I hadn’t thought of using pink paint! Great idea.

I like how someone made the comment that those people should have been prepping. We never know when it will come in handy!

LOL. I did that for my thermos—Stanley thermos-pink. It worked. I was looking for a pink colored tool kit with drill etc—never found one.

I don’t think pink works at home though—just when it’s something that might be seen other places.

Sweat pants and t shirt got faded on once-turn pink. He wore them around the house all the time. LOL

LOL! Those manufacturers are pretty short-sighted!

Canning jars -

I love those things and I’m not sure why! But I feel God smiled on me when we moved to East Tennessee and I found an ad on Craigslist selling used quart wide-mouth canning jars in Roan Mountain for $4 a dozen. Quart wide mouth is my jar of choice. When I got there I found she still had the original boxes and each jar had a ring on it! I think I bought almost all she had, six or seven dozen. I felt like my life was complete.

Which brands are your fav and which the least liked?

Do you use commercial jars for anything?

Note: it might be stupid to be posting this on Christmas Eve. If there’s likely not much response, I’ll just post the same topic next week, probably on New Year’s Eve :-)
