I have never understood why people who do not watch/eat/indulge/believe in a particular thing, make a point of appearing on threads regarding those things, just to piss and moan.

In real life, Reedus rides motorcycles, hangs out with hillbillies, eats the stuff they fix for him and goes to gun ranges to shoot the hell outta stuff.

My take on it was always that Daryl is the ‘angel’ of the group... hear me out..
Angels have always been the holy warriors of good, sent by legions of good to do battle with evil. They protect the weak, and hunt down evil. It was the archangel Michael who slayed the devil, and in the wars between heaven and hell the soldiers of good are always led by angels. They are the protectors of the flock, particularly the most helpless.
Daryl’s role with the group is similar, he is their defender from evil. He also shows a special intrigue and soft spot for the most fragile and helpless of the group (Judith, Beth, etc.) again showing his tendencies to defend the flock.
Granted, it also suits to his characters style, painted angel wings on a leather jacket are redneck and suited to him, but then again so are roses/skulls/crosses which could just as easily have been used. The show has also shown many instances of using Christian imagery and references to reinforce themes (Herschel and his bible the most blatant example) which makes me think the wings were not just a passive aesthetic choice.
