How Michelle Obama subverted respectability politics with a ponytail
Christian Century ^ | 2/22/2018 | Brittney Cooper

Respectability politics died the day Michelle Obama showed up at her last official engagement as First Lady with a thrown-together ponytail-bun combination and a facial expression fit for a funeral. She looked flawless as always. She also looked fed up and ready to go. Respectability politics—the belief that black people can overcome many of the everyday, acute impacts of racism by dressing properly and having education and social comportment—is, first and foremost, performed as a kind of sartorial prerogative. What I mean is that your fashion choices are subject to great scrutiny.

(snip)

So when I saw her hair on her last day, it was clear that she had not spent hours in a stylist’s chair getting her ’do done just right. Presumably, she would have wanted to be a fashion stunner for her final formal public appearance. Instead, this bona fide fashion icon showed up to the inauguration of Donald Trump with a quick and convenient, on-the-go ’do, and what looked like a good church dress she had pulled from the closet. Certainly, she may simply have been gracious in letting Melania have her moment. But there was also something about the refusal to perform the public standard—a standard that Mrs. Obama had herself set—that marked an unceremonious ending.

Her hair was a signal to the world that what we were about to witness was some bullshit. She knew it. We knew it. “Do y’all see this shit?” that hair asked of all of us who were watching

The writer is celebrating her (Michelle’s) disdain and hatred for Trump, America, and all that America (used to) represent.

Well, I’d say *off but it would upset the proprietor of FR. That’s how I feel about every single whiny screed and rant anymore.

I personally don’t give a rat’s anymore.

And I’m not the only one.

“It is black American women whose bodily history is bound up with the burden of reproducing the condition of unfreedom for our children. It, therefore, meant something—possibly even everything—to have a black woman, descended from these black women, ascend to the highest role our nation designates for women (since the presidency still eludes us).”

Fair enough, but I can’t agree that the role of First Lady qualifies as “the highest ... our nation designates for women ... “ After all, that is neither an appointed nor an elected position. Women have been able to wield far more influence by serving in the cabinet as Secretary of State (Albright, Rice, and Clinton), the Supreme Court (O’Connor, Ginsberg) or Congress, (Clinton, et. al.)

If that were not the case, Hillary Clinton would not have bothered to pursue two out of three of those jobs.

So what exactly is “christiancentury” anyway!? Does Franklin Graham write like this now too?

Gotta give the writer credit for perseverance though. It took her 13 months to write the piece! (Seriously, I had to look at the date to make sure this wasn't some rerun from Feb. 2017!)

Meanwhile, back in the REAL world:

Headline: “She left her baby in a car seat for days — and told cops she was ‘just too busy,’ Michigan police say”

When they arrived to the hospital, court records indicate that “Noah’s body was in advanced stages of decomposition.”

“His stomach was obviously bloated, his eyes were glossy, and he was emitting a strong, foul odor,” the Free Press reported court documents saying. “Noah had blood on his genitals and buttocks.’’

I read this entire article, and all I can say is WOW.

The seething toxic “Destroy Whitey” sentiment oozes out of every sentence, every word. With women like Chewbacca and this author as “educated role models,” American black women are doomed, truly doomed. I have no pity nor sympathy for any angry black woman, but I do feel sorry for their babies. The babies don’t choose their lives of poverty, fatherlessness, and moral chaos.

It looks like she used a Sharpie marker on her eyebrow at the inauguration. “Undisputed fashion icon”—BWAH HAH HAH, that’s hilarious.

Except for highly-posed official photographs of Chewbacca smilng, she was/is perpetually scowling in candid snapshots. She’s the epitome of a perpetually combative angry black woman.

LOL, one of my favorite Chuck Heston movie lines: “Get your hands off me, you damned dirty ape!”

I occasionally use that line on Mr. RooRoo if he’s in the mood and I’m not LOLOL.
