I absolutely love these types of interviews. Joni Mitchell does this from time to time too. They are a Hell of a lot more interesting than the banal puff pieces where the artist talks about how much he or she loves everyone.

I was surprised at how competitive and envious Joni sounded in that article. Maybe I should not have been surprised. Early on, Joni knew of her natural gifts as a musician, as a lyricist, and she made the most of them. I don’t think Joni speaks in any large public forums anymore, not since her stroke a few years ago.
At one time, Paul McCartney was envious of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Mick Jagger envious of the Beatles Srgt. Pepper. . This inspired Sympathy for The Devil, one of the Stones best works. A certain degree of competition is a good thing. That often inspires someone to try harder.
