That's because those particular sports have feminine qualities -- grace, poise. Maybe tennis or fencing. They're at least "gender-neutral."
Anything overtly rough or group-oriented (i.e. football, basketball) just doesn't feel right with women. (I'm a woman). They're just aping the men.
