One Juvenile Arrested After Police Say Threats Caused Lockdown of Orono (MN) Schools

Orono Police Chief Correy Farniok said one juvenile was arrested at Orono High School Wednesday afternoon in connection to a pair of social media posts that caused a lockdown of Orono schools.

Farniok said the juvenile arrested was one of two persons of interest who have been identified in the matter. He said both suspects, who were identified as students, were holed up in Orono High School during the lockdown.

Police were informed around 10:57 a.m. Wednesday of a pair of threats made on social media threatening a shooting at Orono schools at noon.

That led to a lockdown which lasted five hours.

During that time, anxious parents waited for hours in their cars outside the police perimeter. Many of them texting with their kids inside the school.

"The doors are locked, they are hiding behind their desks, they are waiting to hear what to do next," said Sara Ellefson, whose son is an 8th grader at the middle school.

Students released an hour after normal dismissal times after Farniok said the investigation determined the posts may have been sent from inside Orono schools.

"All students at Orono schools are safe," he said. "There is no longer a threat to the school." Farniok said neither the juvenile arrested nor the second person of interest were armed. The chief said it was too early to tell if the second person of interest would be arrested.

Dr. Karen Orcutt, the superintendent of Orono schools, said classes will resume on a normal schedule Thursday, and crisis team members would be available in each building. Each building would also have a police presence, she said.

"Safety and security are of the utmost importance in our schools and that guided our actions today," she said.

Idiots.

My friend Charlie sits two cubes away from me at work. Both of his kids attend Orono schools. His son is in K and his daughter is in the third grade.

Charlie had a real bad day today.

Orono is one of the wealthier suburbs of the Cities. I can understand why these underprivileged white kids would revolt against such an oppressive system. /s

I really hope that these two get the legal beat down that they so richly deserve.

The article fails to say what their posts said. I’d like to know.

They haven’t released the actual content of the social media posts.

Two words got the attention of law enforcement.

Gun and violence.

The content is of interest. Another kid was arrested simply for saying "I can buy an AR-15."

I saw that thread.

Kids will say stupid stuff at the exact wrong time. It’s what kids do. Some adults, too.

However, authorities have the ability to over react, as well.

I don't think that's even a question anymore.

On the way home I drove passed a news van heading out there and saw a news helicopter circling. Someone is in big trouble.

Yeah. FBI was there in less than an hour, this morning. My pal Charlie would like to have some “alone time” with these two morons.

“A specific threat was made just before 11 a.m., indicating someone would go to Orono schools and “shoot it up” at noon. The threat was made on Facebook and Twitter from inside the school, Farniok said.”

“Each of these threats indicated a shooting would occur at the Orono schools at noon,” he said at the news conference. Once they were assessed, officials decided to place the schools on a lockdown.”

And if the Florida sheriff would have acted on ANY of the numerous threats made by the crazy kid down there it could have been avoided.

They sure are quick to act once the horse has left the barn.

Thanks! That is definitely threatening talk.
Looks like a lot of these problem kids are going to get themselves picked up.
That’s a good thing. Off the streets and into a program.
Parents in denial won’t be able to shelter them anymore.

Oh I can’t even imagine!

I tell you this is happening all over the place- really often...some of these kids think this is a prank and it is crazy! All over social media and causes lock downs...they arrest the kids but doesn’t seem to stop them. In fact it seems to cause more...like the worst case of monkey see monkey do...If you do a search for {threats school shooting} you will get over 2 million hits...and it happens all the time when there has not been a recent shooting.

I know there is no way any kid would have seen this as a prank when I was in school...or even when my kids were in school. I have no idea what is wrong with kids now!

Parents are going to have to step up and raise their children...and armed staff at schools, and or armed officers at schools. It just has to end...

Friends of mine ask me why I’m not on social media.

Then, I point them to stuff like this.

Reaping what has been sown by taking God and corporal punishment out of school.

By locking down this jerk was given a lot of power and the other kids see that.

He should have been drug out in front of the other students and given an old fashioned butt warming.
