The first set of estimates are in, and theyre showing that Disney/Marvels Black Panther is headed toward a historic weekend with $200M-$205M over four-days, $175M over three. These figures do not come from Disney. The Ryan Coolger-directed, an co-written pic with Joe Robert Cole should post an estimated $72M today, with last nights $25.2M previews repping 35% of that number.
On a three-day and four-day basis, Black Panthers estimates are easily the pre-summer records beating Beauty and the Beast ($174.7M 3-day, $188.2M 4-day) and Warner Bros./DCs Batman v. Superman ($166M 3-day, $181M 4-day). If these figures maintain, then Black Panther will own the 7th best opening of all-time at the domestic box office behind Captain America: Civil War ($179M). The pic is also on track to beat Marvels Iron Man 3 ($174.1M 3-day, $185.4M 4-day). Beyond amazing, especially for this time of year, but this holiday always works in the majors favor: ComScore reports that 23% K-12 and 9% colleges are off today, figures which will respectively spike to 88% out and 34% out. Over four-days, Cooglers Black Panther beats the first four days of F. Gary Grays Fate of the Furious debut by 86% (or $107.3M). Gray owned the previous opening record for a movie directed by an African American.
Personally I am burned out on these Comic Book and Sci-Fi movies, so I probably want see it until it turns up on Netflix or something.
Thass raciss!
What did they say?
Because we feel this movie, the whole hype surrounding it is nothing but another attack on White, where Black is the good guy and White the bad. Because it is all based on skin color, it has nothing to teach anybody. That is, unless all of the claim of the racists on both sides are true. It’s nothing about people getting along together.
What were the demographics of the attendees? Mostly white or black?
Funny how nobody is going to complain about the lack of diversity in the cast.
Your first post in how many weeks, and it’s to tell us just how “racist” we are.
His/her posting history says it all.
I would say 60/40 Black. I was surprised to see so many whites. Probably Hillary voters.
Yes, it says I am not a freaking racist lunatic.
It is not presales. Most movie goers buy tickets in advance especially when it is a big opening.
I’ve heard of presales.
I went to the movie Friday at noon. Full showing, and there was s total of 4 non black people (me among them).
Good movie, but predictable, for this Marvel fan. Won’t put any spoilers, but there were a few parts I didn’t like.
Actual, it’s about black on black crime, and father figure abandonment that I took from it as a central theme.
Sure, there’s a bad guy who’s white (Klaue), but there’s a good guy who’s white, top (Ross).
I’ve not seen any of the comic book movies and don’t intend to. What’s the big deal about this one? Did they make a black guy the hero? I thought that has been a fixed rule in Hollywood for many years now.
Blaxsplotation round II!
